Common conditions

Hypnosis is useful for a wide range of problems,ranging from simple behaviour changes, to coping with chronic diseases.  Below is a selection of some of the most common things that hypnotherapy can help with, however call today to discuss your individual requirements.

 It is not surprising in todays' society that many of us can have feelings of inferiority or low self-esteem.  Often there is a pressure to succeed in life, and when we don't always manage, we can feel a terrible sense of failure.  Relationships that have broken up can leave us feeling rejected and unwanted on a subconscious level.  Work dynamics are not always ideal, which can greatly demotivate us.  Anxiety and low self esteem are very common problems in many people, and hypnotherapy is very effective at helping us overcome these feelings of worthlessness or inability to cope.  Building a healthy self esteem is at the core of all hypnotherapy treatments, and can enable so many positive changes in all aspects of your life. A phobia is an anxiety disorder....an irrational response to rational stimuli.In the majority of cases, a phobic patient is absolutely aware that their response is irrational and beyond reason, however they still cannot control it when brought into contact with their phobic stimulus.  Even when we know that the phobia is completely irrational it does not stop the genuine feeling of fear it creates. Each time the phobia is triggered, it ingrains the association further and we can become more and more sensitive to that trigger object.
Using hypnotherapy, we can desensitize clients to phobic triggers, and interrupt the neural pathways that were previously easily provoking that fight or flight response.
It is impossible to feel opposing emotions at the same time, therefore we work on the technique of replacing feelings of fear with those of relaxation, calm and control.

Common fears and phobias:

Fear of flying, fear of spiders (arachnaphobia), dental anxiety, claustrophobia, social anxiety, perfomance anxiety

Stress has a profound impact on todays society.  Research shows that 12 million British adults see their doctor with mental health issues each year.  The majority of this number are suffering with stress related illness, anxiety, depression and low self esteem.  Stress can manifest itself in a number of ways.  Hypnotherapy teaches us the art of incredibly deep relaxation, which you can use yourself in the comfort of your own home, in order to tackle the root cause of issues which cause imbalance and upset in our daily lives.  Hypnosis is truly a life-changing journey.

A typical panic attack presents itself as a number of the following symptoms:

 Clammy hands, Racing heart, ‘Butterflies’ in stomach, Increased respiration rate, Needing to ‘escape'

 Dizziness, Nausea, Hot or cold flushes, Sweating.  Severe panic can mimic heart attacks and be very frightening.

Panic attacks are often alarming and confusing to the sufferer.  Over time, they can lead to to onset of phobias, depression, and social reclusion.  In reality, a panic attack is an overstimulation of the body’s defense mechanisms.  Stress builds up over time, and if we do not effectively release it from our system, suddenly the body overloads, producing a massive amount of adrenaline which presents itself in this terrifying form of panic disorder.   Hypnotherapy is very successful in dealing with panic attacks.  The therapist can help reveal the original source of a panic attack, and desensitize the patients to those overwhelming feelings.  As the patient regains control, the neural pathways in the mind that were previously programmed to evoke a panic response, will be interrupted by better, calming feelings, thus ending the pattern.

It is perfectly natural to wake several times during the night as part of a healthy sleeping pattern.  However occasionally when we have a lot of things on our mind our sleep can be disrupted.  Hypnosis can help get to the root of the issue and make the relevant changes to enable you to re-establish healthy sleeping patterns.

Dental anxiety is a very common problem.  When you consider that the mouth can be sensitive and that laying back in the dentists' chair requires a lot of trust, it isn't surprising that for some people this hasn't always been a positive experience.  Using hypnosis you can learn to discharge feelings of anxiety very quickly, target specific fears such as needle phobia, feel relaxed and calm in the dental chair and have a more positive experience, therefore enabling you to receive regular dental treatment.  See the 'links' page for details of a phobic-friendly practice.

Hypnosis can help to create a perfect performance...whether it is an important sporting activity coming up, or a musical recital, a stage appearance, a speech... the scenarios are limitless.  Every performer or sportsman needs an edge to help them achieve, however sometimes nerves or adrenaline can take over too much, creating a feeling of nerves or worry that overwhelms the focus required.  Hypnosis can help the patient  to rehearse events in their mind to perfect them and deal with feelings of nerves, allowing them to achieve optimum perfomance.

Many unwanted habits are successfully treated with hypnotherapy, using a variety of different approaches to manage or eliminate symptoms.  Some habits are deeply rooted and can present as an obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).  Whilst many of us have 'quirky' habits, when these begin to take over and become obsessive or ritualistic, they can soon impact on other areas of our lives and can cause more stress... perpetuating the cycle.

Some common habits and OCD’s are;

 Hair pulling or chewing

 Thumb sucking

 Teeth grinding (bruxism)

 Jaw clicking

Tormenting thoughts

Hand washing

Hypnosis helps to break the pattern of obsessive behaviours and habits and gives you back the control.

Do you suffer with chronic pain?  It can be incredibly wearing, depressing and draining.  Hypnosis can give deep relaxation techniques to manage the pain, turn the intensity down, manipulate the symptoms and even provide a level of natural analgesia.  Using pyschoneuroimmunology techniques, hypnosis can be extremely effective in managing chronic illness and helping you regain control of your symptoms.

We would never claim to guarantee outright success with fertility issues, however Hypnosis is becoming more widely utilised in this field, with good results.  Infertility is often not just a physical symptom, and in some cases, can manifest as a result of underlying psychological issues.  For those who are undergoing fertility treatments such as IVF, this can create a tremendous strain both physically and mentally, as well as putting even the strongest relationship to the test.  Hypnosis can help you achieve awareness and insight and allow you to harmonize your body and mind, achieving optimum balance to encourage success.

The skin is the largest organ of the body and unsurprisingly, can mirror on the outside feelings from the inside.  Conditions such as psoriasis, excema and acne can be greatly soothed and aided with hypnotherapy.  As well as learning to cope with the pain or itching, the skin has been known to greatly improve with the therapeutic techniques practised.

Hypnotherapy can be useful to assist people who are having relationship issues, those who are bereaved or feeling a level of grief… either from a relationship breakup, loss of communication, or even having lost a pet. Grief causes a wide range of natural emotions, from sadness to anger and feelings of injustice or abandonment.  Coping with loss can also cause insomnia, loss of appetite, stress and depression.  Hypnosis helps you to find a calm place in your mind to process those feelings naturally, improve sleep patterns and begin the healing process.

Do you rely on willpower alone to help you banish the cigarettes?  Have you tried nicotine replacement therapies such as gum and patches, but found they do not work sufficiently?  Many smokers say it is fairly easy to 'give up' but much harder to not start smoking again.

Hypnotherapy can tackle the part of your mind that desperately wants to stop smoking, and convey this easily to your subconscious, effectively ‘reprogramming’ you into enjoying life minus the tobacco.

 Nicotine produces receptors in the brain that are stimulated by each cigarette.  The chemical process of smoking satisifies these receptors enough to calm a craving quickly.  With nicotine replacement therapies, these provoke a different chemical response in the body, which can stimulate some of the receptors and mildly relieve a craving.  For some people this is all they need to 'take the edge off', but for others NRT does not satisfy all the nicotine receptors in the brain.  Willpower alone really comes down to your strength to ignore those cravings. Everyone needs willpower to stop smoking, or any other habit - the desire to change is what drives success.   Hypnosis can help empower a person to do so easily and effortlessly, with high motivation and long lasting determination.

Our smoking cessation programme is designed to be quick and effective.  It involves a detailed case history, so we can then tailor the session specifically to the individual.

Hypnosis can help to relieve the natural anxieties of pregnancy, and provide a wonderfully relaxed birthing experience for both you and your partner. Remove any specific fears, learn how to manage contractions, prepare yourself for parenthood and learn techniques to assist you after the birth of baby. Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a very common disorder, yet little is really known or understood about it.  Symptoms range from cramps, diarrhoea, constipation, bloating and urgency.  Many experts believe that IBS can be triggered by factors such as stress and anxiety, as well as foods and lifestyle.  Hypnotherapy can tackle the root of the condition to ensure long term changes.

With the advancement of medical science, emphasis was placed upon surgery and pharmaceuticals as a solution for most medical conditions.  As a result, psychological processes and their impact on health took less precedence.  This began to change as we approached the 21st century, when science is now proving a tangible connection between our immune system and how we tackle/cope with illness and disease, our hormones, and our nervous system.

Much new information is coming to light regarding cells in our body that were previously exclusively linked with the immune system, also now being found to have function within the brain and spinal cord.  These studies are uncovering a strong link between depression, stress and the physical impact this has on our bodies. How we think and feel about our illness can determine how comfortably we can cope with it.

Anyone diagnosed with a long term disease will be aware of how this affects their mood from day to day.  Fear, uncertainty and frustration can all add to feelings of stress, depression and negativity.

When considering the course of a disease, accept the diagnosis, but let yourself determine the prognosis.  How we approach illness and chronic health conditions can make a vast difference to how we allow them to affect us.  Hypnosis helps to bring about deep inner calm, removes anger and frustrations, and produces a positive way of coping with chronic illness.

Deep relaxation inhibits the stress receptors within the body.  In turn, the detrimental effects of stress in the body are greatly diminished.

Using specialised hypnotherapy techniques we can help our patients to:

*  Create coping strategies for stress

*  Create more positive belief systems

*  Establish control

*  Manage pain

*  Deal with the emotional aspects of illness

Many different people with varying conditions can greatly benefit from PNI.  The concept of 'mind over matter' is overwhelmingly illustrated allowing the patient to be in control of their symptoms.
